The Sticking Place Film

Launch Day

Today’s a pretty big day in Eye:58 Photography news, thanks to The Sticking Place Film. When two documentary filmmakers, Brittany Baxter and Josephine Anderson decided  to create a documentary film following Canadian wrestler, Leah Callahan, pursuit to the olympics, they needed photos. Having been a wrestler on the U of C varsity team for four years, Leah was a teammate and good friend. I had dozens of photos of her, and I was more than happy to share. I became the official “Stills Photographer” for the Sticking Place Film. And thanks to The Sticking Place Film, I can have a little pride when I say that my photos have been seen from coast to coast, most recently published in The Telegram, St. John’s, Newfoundland, local paper!

But when I say that today’s a pretty big day in news for Eye:58 Photography, I should mention that the big news really isn’t about me, but it’s about

THE STICKING PLACE FILM itself! TODAY IS LAUNCH DAY! Watch it LIVE at 2 PM MOUNTAIN TIME at: http://www.livestream.com/onethousandrivers

IF WE FAIL? WE FAIL. BUT SCREW YOUR COURAGE TO THE STICKING PLACE AND WE’LL NOT FAIL. (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE)

THE STICKING PLACE is an interactive documentary in the making, exploring the journey of elite athlete, Leah Callahan, a freestyle wrestler with a dream to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games. At the 2011 Canadian Wrestling Championships, Leah came within mere inches of defeating her biggest rival, ten time national champ Ohenewa Akuffo. With the Qualification Trials as the final barrier between her and a spot on the Olympic team, Leah has 9 months to push through the most intense training and deep down soul searching of her life in order to come out on the other side with her dream in hand.

As an Olympic hopeful, Leah has pushed her physical limits to a level most of us would never think possible. Leah has also racked up a crazy amount of scary injuries and has put stress on pretty much every other corner of her life to pursue excellence in this sport. Still, she perseveres day in and day out, shaping her life to fit and balance the huge challenges of an Olympic-sized dream. Although these things alone would make Leah an interesting subject, the real reason we have fallen in love with her story (and want to share it with the world) is because Leah helps us to re-imagine her affair with wrestling and the Olympic dream as just one approach to leading an awesome life. With fearless self-awareness, Leah resists the easy to buy into, nicely polished, glorified version of the Olympic dream, and is always critically reflecting on her choice to compromise so much in order to compete as an elite wrestler.

Through the ups and downs of her doubt, elation, breakdowns and revelations, Leah’s journey becomes an invitation for each of us to consider who we are, and who we want to be.

So… Do you want to have a FUN, INTERACTIVE, opportunity to learn the INSIDE scoop on what it is like to be an athlete pursuing an olympic journey?!  Check it out today at 1PM www.thestickingplacefilm.ca
