Kickboxing World Champion
Michelle was 22 years old and 216 lbs when she first walked into Gold’s gym in Northeast Calgary. Although she was athletic, she had always struggled with her weight. She was looking for a way to get fit. And that’s when it happened: Michelle saw a martial arts class and it peaked her interest. She started training and six years later she became a world champion, winning the 2012 International Kickboxing Federation (IKF) World Classic in Orlando, Florida and the World Karate & Kickboxing Council (WKC) championships in Montréal, Quebec.
If you ask Michelle why she trains as a kickboxer, she would tell you, “Because you just learn so much about yourself. Regardless of the outcome I’ve walked away from every fight feeling stronger and knowing more about who I am.”
This past week I had the opportunity to photograph Michelle at Gold’s gym. Here are some photos that I took of Michelle showing of her kickboxing moves.
